1936 Alvis Speed 20 4-seat Tourer £64,995 (Euro 74,476)

Gorgeous pre-war roadster, the Alvis Speed 20 ticks all the boxes, speed, performance and of course stunning good looks!

This car is an Alvis Speed 20, Type SD Model, Chassis Number 13070. which left the Coventry factory in chassis form on April 4th1936, despatched to the Manufacturers Agent Henlys. A separate commission for coachwork then took place, this being done by the Mayfair Carriage Company in London and the car was registered about a year later with the London Mark DYE166.

Little is known of the car’s early history but in 1961 it was in the possession of a Mr Fuller according to an entry in the AOC Year Book.

Both the engine and the body has been changed over the years, but the engine is of exactly the same type as the original SD chassis, and the body an exact replica of an earlier SB Alvis.

The current engine (13476) emanates from a Charlesworth Saloon SD20 Chassis Nr 13025 Reg Nr ACR164. This was turned into a very successful competition car by one Mike Cairnes of Winforton, Hereford, and raced on many occasions in the sixties.

In the mid eighties a complete new SB Sports body was fabricated by Rod Jolley Coachbuilding Co in Lymington ( www.rodjolley.com ) Rod Jolley have an unrivalled reputation for vintage restoration projects. The new body replicates a Cross & Ellis 4-seat Tourer of the thirties. The company personally seasons the ash used in construction to ensure the highest quality work. Panels are hand-formed from aluminium and all welds are meticulously hidden prior to painting. It is estimated that to construct and trim a similar new body of this quality today would cost in excess of £50,000!

On completion the car was re-registered as a Tourer but with a new Reg Nr MSU982. however, the DVLA have now agreed to return the original Registration Number DYE166. New plates are now fitted showing this 1937 Index Nr (See Below)

The car has only had one owner since - a keen AOC member.

The bodywork is finished in Brooklands Green which has an original, mellowed patina, there are some minor imperfections and shrinkage cracks but they add to the authenticity period look. The chromework is completely rust free and bright and Winged Eagle Mascot is a Lois Lejouen original (Value £600) The hood and red hide interior are in near-new condition.

Recent works include an engine service, new HT leads, Distributor Cap, Stainless Steel Exhaust. Fitting Alvis Cooling Fan, It comes with original Alvis Handbook, Tonneau Cover, new MOT and Historic Tax.

AT LAST - Original 1937 Reg Nr restored to the Alvis!
